Sorry,  we are no longer taking reservations for Cliff Waters. Please check back in 2009.

On the cliffs of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and just minutes from the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, Cliff Waters Cottage and Guest Cabin combines exceptional location with sumptuous views, privacy, comfort, and room for the whole family.

The cottage features a loft, cathedral ceiling, open concept living room and kitchen, sunny breakfast nook, four-piece bathroom, and bedroom on the main floor. A classic wood interior finish on the floors, walls, ceilings, and countertops convey warmth, ambiance, and authentic cottage character.  Outside, a large sunny ocean facing deck with glass railings (so that you may enjoy the spectacular view uninterupted), plenty of comfortable seating and a chiminea for campfires in the evening.  During inclement weather, there is a serene covered screened porch - great for storm watching, snoozing and listening to the rain.

The guest cabin, just down the hill from the cottage  provides additional comfort for the family with wood flooring, large sunny picture windows, antique furnishings, and solar lighting. A unique three-piece bathroom complete with a hot outdoor shower overlooks the ocean, sunsets, and a field of wildflowers.

The cottage and guest cabin are rented together as one, and only you and those you choose to bring with you will be on the property at the one time.  Cliff Waters sleeps up to six.

Panoramic views of the water, mountains, coastline, sunsets, stars and wildlife can be privately enjoyed from anywhere on Cliff Waters 2.7 acre oceanfront property.

Our Eco-Conscience

Our land has been in our family for several generations. Living in an oasis of natural beauty and wildlife has inspired us to appreciate the rarity of such a place and preserve it for all it's worth. We have incorporated eco friendly practices into the design and operation of our business. We hope that you enjoy and appreciate our efforts to maintain our natural landscapes. We are proud to say that we are the first accommodation in Nova Scotia to introduce composting toilets and grey water recycling systems (which you'll find in the Spinning Jenny Guest Cabin).

Our other efforts include the use of natural materials such as cotton and wood. We use native plants for landscaping, and let the fields grow in wildflowers. The Spinning Jenny uses LED solar lamps for lighting. You can take them out on the deck at night, into the shower, hang them by your bed for reading or use them to guide your way on an after dark trek, just watch for moose!

When the weather permits, we hang the towels and sheets on line for that fresh crisp country smell that the clothes dryer just can't mimic.  We recycle everything and have set up a big recycling box for you to do the same.  We compost and have started to build a little organic veggie garden using the compost that comes from the cottage.  We also use non-toxic and biodegradable soaps, shampoos and cleansers.

The Lay of the Land and it's View
Cliff Waters Cottage and Guest Cabin are set on the side of the mountain.  With the slope of the terrain, your eyes may stretch over the panoramic view of the ocean, mountains and coastline with no roof lines or power lines to interrupt your view.  The cliffs are quite high, rocky and rugged and there is no access to the beach from Cliff Waters.  There are five beaches within a 2-8 minute drive of the cottage.  To the North, you may see over the trees to the ocean and mountainous coastline of the "Headlands."  To the East, more ocean, and more coastline of "Pollett's Cove", "
Otter Brook Mountain,” and "Black Brook Mountain."   To the South, the "Jimmy's Mountain", and to the West, directly infront of the cottage and guest cabin, a 2+ acre field of wildflowers, open to the ocean and it's sunsets.

The Neighbours
Cliff Waters Cottage and Guest Cabin is the "last house on the road".  Just after roads end (approximately .5km past Cliff Waters), there is a little yellow cabin at the start of the Pollett's Cove hiking trail which remains uninhabited except for one or two weeks every three to four years.

To the Southwest of Cliff Waters (going back towards civilization) are three houses, and two cabins spread out over one kilometer.  The two cabins cannot be seen from the road, so if you did not know any better, it would appear to be three houses spread out over one kilometer.   After a kilometer and a bit down the road (0.5 km by short-cut foot path), The Gampo Abbey Buddhist Monastery, with approximately twenty to thirty practicing students, monks and nuns.  The neighbours are very quiet and peaceful, often the Buddhists are in silent retreats or enjoying extended moments of silence.

Beyond Cliff Waters to the Northeast, we, Jer and Niki, own thirty acres of land which remains an undeveloped forest.  Tucked into the woods on the ocean bank, out of view of the cottage and guest cabin is our little home that we summer in from April to October.  We enjoy our privacy, and respect yours, but are always there to help with questions and to assist you if you have any problems or need a cup of sugar or an egg to make a batch of cookies, without going into town first.

If we do not have availability for the dates that you are looking for, but you would like to stay in Pleasant Bay nonetheless, we highly recommend Windswept B&B. Windswept B&B is a 1940’s farmhouse set on the side of a hill with great views of the ocean and sunsets. Rates range from $60 to $75, tax free, which includes a breakfast of fresh fruit salad, fresh local baked bread, hearty hot cereal, tea, coffee and juice, in other words, you won’t go away hungry.  Tanya Thompson is your host, and you may reach her at (902) 224-1424. We recommend that you book in advance as there are only four rooms in the farm house – three with double beds and one with a single bed. Windswept is located approximately 2 kms off of the Cabot Trail on Red River Road.
